Types Of Stair Lifts

The type of stair lift in a house depends on the types of staircases it has.

Stair lifts help those with mobility problems in the house stay self-sufficient by affording them the ability to travel up and down stairs without any assistance -- a cheaper alternative to installing a residential elevator or platform lift. In addition, stair lifts allow people to stay in a familiar setting. Have a licensed professional install the stair lift equipment properly once you have decided on the type of lift.

Straight Stair Lifts

Manufacturers make straight stair lifts for traditional stairs that go straight up or down. The staircase for a straight lift cannot have slight curves, half-landings or corners. A straight stair lift connects to the staircase treads. A professional can install a straight lift in approximately an hour.

Curved Stair Lift

Staircases that curve, twist, bend or have half landings require a curved lift, which manufacturers must customize for each staircase. This type of lift costs more than a straight stair lift and does not work with other types of staircases.

Outdoor Stair Lift

Use an outdoor stair lift for a house that has stairs or steps at the front, side or back door. The outdoor stair lift is heat resistant and repels ultraviolet rays, so it can withstand the elements of various weather conditions. Other places to use an outdoor stair lift include patios, garden steps, garage steps and basement steps.

Features

Majority stair lifts come equipped with a swivel chair, which turns 90 degrees at the bottom and top of the staircase. The chair locks into place when you are ready to get off the stair lift. Additionally, the seat can adjust up and down depending on your preference. Most newer stair lifts are battery powered and do not require any hazardous long cords or wires to connect to an outlet.
