Install Wood Valances

Valances fit between two upper cabinets.

Wood valances span the gap between two separate cabinets. Typically, they install above the sink or where windows separate the cabinets. Valances have no real function other than that of aesthetics; they are characterized by the french curves or or pointed scallops that point down but can also appear as simple straight boards. Valances are the finishing touch when installing cabinets. They screw on by both ends through the cabinet jambs of the two adjoining cabinets

Instructions

1. Measure the distance between the two cabinets with a tape measure. Add 1/16 inch to the measurement and cut the valance to that measurement with a miter saw.

2. Climb up on the cabinets or use a ladder to reach up to the top of the cabinets. Place the top edge of the valance flush with the top of the two cabinets.

3. Tap on both sides of the valance with a hammer to force it between the two cabinets. If it won't go in, take it down and trim 1/32 inch off the end until it fits snugly between the two cabinets. Tap it in until it is 3/4 inch inset from the outside of the cabinets.

4. Reach into the cabinets with the cordless drill. Drill two holes through each jamb with the 3/16-inch bit, but don't penetrate the end of the valance. Put the 5/32-inch drill bit in the drill and drill though the holes into the valance for pilot holes.

5. Insert 2-inch screws into the holes. Put the Phillips tip in the screw gun and finish by screwing the screws tight into the valance from both sides.

Tips Warnings

If your valance has a distinct center point, cut equal lengths off both ends when you cut it to fit so that your center point stays the same.

Don't use glue. It won't stick to finished cabinets. Always wear safety glasses when working with wood.
