Diy Fabric Pom Poms

Make your own fabric pom poms to use on craft projects, decorate your home and fashion accessories, or add as the finishing touch to a wrapped gift. Fabric pom poms can be made using scraps of fabric left over from previous projects. Use one type of fabric for a solid pom pom or a variety of fabric colors and designs for a scrappy pom pom. This is a take-along, travel-friendly craft project that can be completed in less than 20 minutes.

Instructions

1. Trace two 2 1/2 inch circles on corrugated cardboard using a compass. Center and trace a 1 1/2-inch circle in the center of each larger circle.

2. Place the cardboard on a cutting board. Cut out the circles using a craft knife. Each cut circle will resemble a fat ring.

3. Cut 1/2 inch wide fabric strips. The amount of fabric needed will depend on how thick and heavy your fabric is. Lighter fabric will require more strips than heavyweight fabric. The length will depend on the cuts of fabric you have available. Every strip does not need to be the same length.

4. Stack your cardboard rings together.

5. Wrap the strips around both layers of the stacked rings. Place the beginning end of the strip on the outer edge of the rings and end the strip on the outer edge of the ring. Trim the strip if needed. Continue to add strips until the opening in the center of the ring measures approximately a 1/2 inch in diameter.

6. Cut through the layers of the wrapped fabric strips on the outer edge of the ring using small embroidery scissors. After the layers have been cut the ends will stick out on each side of the cardboard rings.

7. Cut or rip a 1/4 inch wide strip of fabric at least 18 inches long. Slip the center of the strip's length between the layers of the cardboard circles. Bring the ends together and cinch as tight as possible. Tie the ends into a knot.

8. Pull the cardboard circles off the tied pom pom. If the pom pom is too thick to pull the rings off, cut the rings to remove.

9. Fluff and trim the ends of the strips to shape the pom pom.

Tips Warnings

The size of the fabric pom poms can be adjusted by cutting larger or smaller cardboard rings.
