Restring Blinds

Window blinds can add style and update the look of any room. Depending on the material of the blinds, they can vary from costing very little to being somewhat expensive. Blinds can have problems, though, such as having their strings break down. It often can be less expensive to re-string blinds yourself, rather than purchasing a new unit. Re-stringing blinds can be simple and it just takes a few basic materials to get your blinds back to their original state.

Instructions

1. Unhook the blinds from the metal brackets on the wall by lifting them out. Untie the knot in the cord underneath the bottom rail or snip with scissors if it is difficult to untie.

2. Lay the blinds on a flat area and unwind the string from the openings in the slats.

3. Hold the old string next to the new one and use it as a guide, cutting the new one to the appropriate length. Use a tape measure instead if the old string is frayed or broken off. Add 2 inches to the blind's measurements, because it is better to have extra string to cut off and is difficult to add more if the string is too short.

4. Feed the new string through the space in the cord lock located in the head rail and pull through the head rail. Lace the string through the openings in the slats.

5. Put the string through the space in the bottom rail. Make a knot in the string underneath the last rail and cut off the extra string with scissors.

6. Hang the blinds back on the wall and check that they hang straight. Make any adjustments if necessary.

Tips Warnings

Prevent wear and tear on the cords by following certain guidelines. Always lift and lower the blinds while they are open. Avoid raising the blinds to the same position each time, which can weaken the string.
