The Uniden company produces radio scanners that can help you stay connected with local law enforcement during emergency situations by listening in to their communications. You can purchase the Bearcat BC-140XL line of scanners to use in your home or install in your vehicle to help you avoid bad situations while you drive. By programming emergency frequencies into your Bearcat scanner, you can easily listen for broadcasts from local law enforcement and emergency management officials.
Instructions
1. Turn on the Bearcat scanner by pressing the Power button. When you see information on the display, press the Scan button. The scanner will begin searching through preprogrammed channels. Press the Man button to stop scanning.
2. Enter in the channel number that you want to program a frequency into. There are 100 channels available. Enter in the corresponding number using the keypad and then press the Man button to go to that channel.
3. Locate the frequency that you want to save into your scanner. You can do this several different ways, including purchasing a book of frequencies from Uniden or going to RadioReference.com (see Resources) and searching through the frequency database there.
4. Use the keypad to enter in the frequency that you want to save. Include the decimal point in the correct spot. When finished, press the E button to save your frequency. If this station has already been programmed into the memory of the scanner or if it is outside of the listening range of your antenna, you will hear a beep and receive an error message on the display screen.
5. Repeat the above process to store other frequencies. When finished, press the Scan button and the scanner will begin searching through these stations, stopping whenever it picks up a signal from one of them.
