MR16 light-emitting diode (LED) lights are halogen lamps manufactured by CRS Electronics and designed for use in domestic and retail environments. The bulbs use less power compared to many standard lamps and are often retrofitted to drive down energy costs. Troubleshooting an MR16 bulb that doesn't seem to be working involves checking for damage and inspecting several other things that have an effect on the light.
Check the Connection
The bulb connects to its power supply via two prongs. If the MR16 isn't properly seated into its socket, it will not light. Turn off the light, push the bulb down to complete the connection, and turn the power back on. Use a cloth if you need to touch the surface of the bulb; oil from your skin could cause the MR16 to fail prematurely.
Confirm the Power Supply
Make sure the light fixture containing the problem bulb is connected to a working power supply. A blown fuse, tripped breaker or even a light switch in the wrong position could be causing the outage. A blown fuse or tripped breaker often causes all lights in a building to go out. Always swap blown fuses for identical replacements.
Replace the Defective Bulb
Like all bulbs, MR16s eventually expire and need to be replaced. Turn off the power, pull the dead bulb out of its socket and insert a fresh replacement. The light should return to normal when you switch the power back on. If the bulb quickly fails, have an electrician inspect the wiring. MR16s are guaranteed for three years of constant, 24-hour use or five years of 12-hour use.
Inspect the Wiring
Have a certified electrician inspect the wiring in the building for damage if the light remains off. If the bulb is in a desk or standing lamp, try another bulb to help determine whether the fixture or the bulb is defective. Ask for a quote before agreeing to any work.
