If you receive a wedding invitation that requests you dress for a semi-formal occasion, what exactly does that mean? Wedding attire can be tricky for guests, as there is not a designated outfit for you like there will be for the wedding party. As a guest, your attire will depend on the time of the event along with your gender. To make sure you do not stand out like a sore thumb at the wedding, follow a few simple steps to make sure you blend ... in a good way.
For Women
If the wedding is during the afternoon hours (no later than 3 p.m.), consider it a daytime event. If it is warm outside, wear a summery dress or skirt. A short skirt does not mean mini skirt, but a tasteful, flowing outfit. The dress does not need to be full-length, but should reach just above your knees. Keep it simple and tasteful. If the weather is a bit chilly, add a shawl or a nice, long coat to your ensemble.
For evening weddings, a cocktail dress with black pumps is perfect--just be sure not to wear white. That color is reserved solely for the bride.
For Men
Attire for a semi-formal wedding for the men tends to be the same, regardless of the time of the event. A collared dress shirt (short- or long-sleeved, depending on the weather) and a pair of slacks is the appropriate way to dress for the event.
If you are attending an evening wedding, add a tie to your ensemble and bring along a sport jacket, just in case.
For Children
If children are invited to the wedding, bring them along dressed to match the event. Little girls can wear a frilly, age-appropriate dress with cute, black patent leather shoes and a bow in their hair or a dressy skirt with a matching top.
For the boys, dress them in slacks, a buttoned shirt and a clip-on bow tie. Make sure they have a pair of dress shoes, as well. A sport coat is not absolutely necessary for a child, even if it is an evening wedding.
