Buderus GB142/30 Installation cost

Hi. We received a quote for a Buderus GB142/30 106K BTU boiler to be installed in our 2000 sq ft house in Pittsburgh. We feel that the quote came in very high at $8,200. This is a single zone, swap out the existing boiler installation. We're using all the existing pipes. We figured there was approximately $4,200 in materials (boiler plus expansion tank, low water cut off, automatic water feed with a backflow preventer, outdoor sensor, indoor thermostat and PVC flue pipes). He told us that installation would take one day. This seems to be a very well-reviewed contractor (Angie's List). What's the deal? Am I missing something that would warrant this quote? Thanks. Keep in mind that the contractor needs to put markup on the materials. He has disposal of the old boiler. I's likely going to be a LONG day for the install team. Normally we are 10 to 12 hours with drain down, removal, and install, wire and fill. $8200.00 does not seem to be all that excessive, you have selected them since they have a good name. That costs something too. You may find someone cheaper out there that will do the job, they may do it as well. As long as they are around long enough to service your home and equipment. That's what markup is all about. Originally Posted by AngerManagement We received a quote for a Buderus GB142/30 106K BTU boiler to be installed in our 2000 sq ft house in Pittsburgh. When you're spending that kind of money, I would seek three quotes from recommended contractors. By recommended, I mean by people you contact personally. I don't know too much about Angie's list. It seems like there may be the possiblility of a shill? But anyway, ask each contractor as many questions as you can think of. You can go with the one you feel most comfortable with, whether or not he has the low price. What happened to your existing boiler? How old was it (think asbestos?). Was there a heat loss calculation done to size the new boiler? (There needs to be.) How did you arrive at your estimate of the material cost? Liablility insurance. Workmen's wages. Workmen's benefits. Rent/mortgage on buildings. Utility bills. Vehicle maintenance. Fuel for vehicles. Taxes. Payments on the Porsche. Thanks to all for the replies. It seems like there may be the possiblility of a shill? Nah, Angie's List is on the up and up. It's very tightly monitered. This contractor has more than a hundred positive reviews and two or three negatives. Since people seem more incentivized to review when negative, this is a good sign. What happened to your existing boiler? How old was it (think asbestos?). Leaks between the sections and 40 years. I had to turn it on for the plaster contractor and the CO detector rang up 210 ppm. No, we are not living in the house yet. And no, the boiler isn't running. And yes, it's getting cold in there. Was there a heat loss calculation done to size the new boiler? (There needs to be.) There was not. We spent a fortune on new windows and insulation and I'd be interested to see the results. How did you arrive at your estimate of the material cost? I went through the estimate and looked up the costs online. The boiler seems to be available for $3700 with free shipping. When you're spending that kind of money, I would seek three quotes from recommended contractors. This is our next step. I understand that running any business has overhead. I'm not seeking material cost plus $10 per hour per worker. It's just that $4,000 above materials for 10 hours of work seems high. There's gonna be at least two, and possibly three workers... so figure 20-30 hours of labor at what, maybe $40/hr billable? Originally Posted by AngerManagement Hi. He told us that installation would take one day. . if you really want to be convinced, call your local oil companies and see what they will charge I had 2 oil companies and come out and they said near 8K each but they never even did a heat loss (just measured baseboards). through talking with my barber, he actually recommended someone he was happy with and although it was about 8500, they did a proper heat loss and got me a unit that was 50K less than what the oil guys both wanted to sell me. Of course since they sold oil they wanted to have an oversized boiler. there were anywhere from 2-3 guys here most of the time and 5 to take out the old unit. Figure on 500-800 for asbestos removal alone if you need that. (its what the oil companies quoted me.) here's my install if you are interested in some fun pics http://forum.doityourself.com/boiler...r-install.html I had mostly what you described above but i had all new pipes at the boiler plus a triangle smart 40. Also dont get it done in middle of winter...december was cold and i had to have oil filled heaters and it wasnt too fun. but he gave me 2 to borrow so i lived. Yup, $1,200. if you really want to be convinced, call your local oil companies and see what they will charge We're natural gas. But point taken. I'm sure if our natural gas suppliers came out they would rip me to no end. For my Burnham ES2, new pipes run for 2nd zone, and indirect hot water heater, I paid $9200. And that was the good price. The plumber is friends with my boss and helped out on the price. I got 3 other prices for a boilers that were mod/cons like that Buderus and they were north of $12,000. I would never complain about paying a higher price for a good contractor. They deserve it because they do the job right and stand by their work. They also deserve to take some profit on their work as well. He will probably have to do a bit of pipe work around the new boiler as well. It will require a different setup than your old one. It's also a direct vent so all that will have to be run. I think the materials are going to be more than $4200. Just my 2 cents. Some of these online re-sellers cut the throats of honest wholesalers. With out a good wholesaler we may as well just buy from china for all the support you get. $8200 is not out of line for the job you describe, of course I can't see it, but its in the ballpark. You already stated your confident in the installing contractor, thats a big plus. If you think its high get a few more quotes. I will say this, if you just shop price with something like this you will get what you pay for. Installing a mod/con like the GB142 is not rocket science, but it's not plain vanilla simple, either. A good installer is worth every penny. You get a quality installation that performs optimally. Check the sizing against a heat loss. Probably you could get by with the 142/24 instead of the 142/30, especially if you upgraded the windows and do some other insulating/sealing.
