Build A Bookcase Headboard

If you're a book lover, you're bed should have a bookcase headboard. Here's a quick and easy plan for a bookcase headboard that you can build in a day.

Instructions

1. Make these cuts:

1 piece @ 68 inches x 12 inches

1 piece @ 66 1/2 inches x 12 inches

1 piece @ 66 1/2 inches x 11 1/4 inches

2 pieces @ 47 1/4 inches x 12 inches

2 pieces @ 35 1/4 inches x 12 inches

2 pieces @ 35 1/4 inches x 8 1/2 inches

6 pieces @ 11 1/4 inches x 8 1/2 inches

2 pieces @ 48 inches x 12 inches

2. Sand all surfaces.

3. Build the left side. Attach (1) 47 1/4-inch x 12-inch piece, (1) 35 1/4-inch x 12-inch piece and (1) 35 1/4-inch x 8 1/2-inch piece so that they form a squared off U that's 10 inches wide and 47 1/4 inches high on the left side and 35 1/4 inches high on both the right side and on the back. Make sure all three pieces are flush at the bottom. Insert (1) 11 1/4 inch x 8 1/2 inch piece as a shelf 1 inch from the bottom. Attach another 11 1/4-inch x 8 1/2-inch shelf up 10 inches and a third 10 inches above that.

4. Build the right side. Using the same sized pieces that you used in the above step create another side. The only difference is that the 47 1/4-inch piece is on the right side and the 35 1/4-inch piece is on the left.

5. Span the 2 sides. Take the 66 1/2-inch x 12-inch piece and attach to the top of the 35 1/4-inch pieces (the inside sides) of the two sides so that it is touches the 47 1/4-inch pieces. Attach. Make sure it is flush with the fronts.

6. Take the 66 1/2-inch x 11 1/4-inch piece and sit it vertically on top of the 66 1/2-inch x 12-inch piece flush with the back. It will be even with the top of the 47 1/4-inch pieces.

7. Attach the top. Place the 68-inch piece on top of the unit, making sure that it is flush with the front, back and both sides. Attach.

8. Take the 48-inch x 24-inch piece and attach it vertically to the bottom of the top shelf and the inside piece of both sides. Its bottom will be 11 1/4 inches off the ground.

9. Edgeband all exposed edges. Trim.

10. Fill in all visible holes with wood filler and let dry. Sand smooth.

11. Paint or stain the headboard to your liking.
