Troubleshooting A Sony Digital 8 Handycam Dcrtrv460

The Sony DCR-TRV460 is a hand-held digital camcorder released in 2004. The DCR-TRV460 is loaded with features, including a 2.5 inch touchscreen LCD display, 20x optical zoom and compatibility with less expensive Hi8 cassettes compared to MiniDV cassettes. The camcorder may not operate as intended on occasion, but you can often troubleshoot and fix any problems yourself.

No Power or Controls Not Responsive

There are times when using the DRV-TRV460 that the power will not turn on, or the controls will not work even when the camcorder is powered on. If the camcorder does not power on, the battery is likely drained, and needs to be replaced or recharged. When a recharged battery still does not supply power to the camcorder, use an AC adapter to plug it into a power outlet. If the camcorder works, then you should replace the battery, as it is malfunctioning.

When the DRV-TRV460 is not responding even though the power is on, remove the battery or the AC adapter from the camcorder, and let it sit for at least 1 minute. When the minute is up, reinstall the battery or plug in the adapter. This step will release any built up static electricity in the device.

If the controls still do not work, an error in the machine is likely causing the problem. Take a small, pointed object and press the "RESET" button. This will clear any errors in the camera, and allow you to use it as normal.

Cassette Does Not Eject

If you press the "Eject" button and the cassette holder does not open, make sure the battery or AC adapter are connected correctly to the camera. Remove the battery from the camcorder and then reattach it. You may also need to recharge the battery or attach a new one to the machine if the current battery is drained.

Another possible reason for an inoperative cassette ejection is moisture condensation in the machine. Moisture condensation can occur when the DCR-TRV460 is brought from a cold area to a warm area. Let the camcorder sit for at least an hour before trying to use the machine again. If you are still unable to eject the cassette, let it sit for another hour. To prevent moisture condensation, place the DCR-TRV460 in a sealed plastic bag and let it sit for one hour when the camera is moved from a cold location to a warm location.

Tape Does Not Start When "REC START/STOP" is Pressed

When the tape does not start after pressing "REC START/STOP," check that the "POWER" switch is turned to "On." Make sure the tape has not reached the end. You should rewind the cassette, or place a new one in the camera if it does. Finally, as when the cassette will not eject from the camera, moisture may have formed on the inside of the DRV-TRV460. Open the cassette door, if possible, and let the camcorder sit for at least one hour. This should be enough time to allow the moisture to dry, allowing you to operate the device as normal.
