Build A 19 Inch Audio Equipment Rack

Organize your audio equipment in a 19-inch rack.

A standard 19-inch equipment rack is an alternative to stacking your audio components one on top of the other. The purchase of a rack can be costly, but you can build a unit in your home utilizing a small amount of materials and time.

Instructions

1. Choose the type of rack you prefer, with a door or without. Select the number of compartments that you wish to include in your rack. For the sake of this article, we will assume that you are building a 19-inch rack to store four separate audio components. Use a saw to cut four separate, 20-inch-by-20-inch pieces of plywood.

2. Determine the height of your rack according to the height of your components. Assume a 10-inch height for this article. Saw four 2-inch-by-2-inch boards to a height of 40 inches each. Use sandpaper to even out the edges of all the boards and color them with a wood stain.

3. Add braces to the shelves. Choose between adding metal braces or creating braces out of wood by cutting them into three-inch, triangular shapes. To add metal braces, extract a square piece of wood from the edges of each shelf so you can insert the metal braces into these slots.

4. Place the lower part of each of your wooden triangular braces at a three-inch distance from the lower part of the two-inch board. Place each triangle at a distance of eight inches from the other. The first shelf should be at an elevation of six inches from the floor and the distance between each of the shelves should be at least 10 inches.

For the use of metal braces, place a brace at each end of the shelf at a distance of 11 inches from each other. The upper part of the brace should be at a height of six inches from the lower part. Screw the braces in securely and the shelves into each brace.
