Build Low End Speaker Boxes

The low end of the musical spectrum -- commonly called bass -- is the foundation of your car audio system. A system with plenty of low end will have a stronger overall sound and more presence. One good way to improve the low end in your music is to add a subwoofer to your car audio. Car subwoofers must be installed in speaker boxes. Building a low-end speaker box will give you a place to install your subwoofer.

Instructions

1. Cut four 12-by-12-inch square panels from your sheet of medium density fiberboard (MDF) with a circular saw. Cut two more panels measuring 11 by 12 inches.

2. Place two of the 12-by-12-inch panels together with the two 11-by-12 inch panels to form a box with two open parallel sides. Overlap the ends of the 12-by-12 panels over the edges of the 11-by-12 panels so that the external dimensions of the box are 12 by 12 inches around the perimeter. Attach the pieces together with wood screws.

3. Cut an opening in one of the remaining panels for the 10-inch subwoofer with a jigsaw. Mount the subwoofer in the opening with wood screws, placed through the holes in the mounting ring of the subwoofer. Place the panel with the subwoofer on an open side of the box, with the cone facing out. Attach the panel with wood screws.

4. Drill a hole in the remaining piece of MDF. Attach a 4-foot length of speaker wire to the terminals of the subwoofer, the run the wire through the hole in the MDF panel. Place the panel onto the box and attach it with wood screws.
