Calculate The Photo Position Of A Gps Track

Calculate the Photo Position of a GPS Track

Geotagging allows you to calculate and label the location or position of a still photo with its geographic coordinates and share this information with others. The free application Google Earth expands geotagging by allowing you to match digital photos you have taken with their specific position along a GPS track. Google Earth also displays satellite images of imported GPS tracks and calculates the coordinates of the entire track.

Instructions

Import a GPS Track

1. Open Google Earth.

2. Select "File" > "Open."

3. Select the name of the GPS track you wish to import. Select "All files (*.*)" to display all files if you do not see your file listed.

4. Click "Open" to load your GPS track into Google Earth.

View Coordinates of GPS Track

5. Move your cursor to any point on Google Earth's display of the GPS track.

6. Note at the bottom of the screen the satellite image date, coordinates (latitude and longitude), geographic elevation and eye altitude (viewpoint elevation) for that point on the GPS track.

7. Move your cursor along the GPS track.

8. Note that the coordinates update to correspond to the cursor location on the GPS track.

Display Date/Time Stamp of Track Points

9. Under "Places" > "Tracks" > "Points" select the desired points to display their coordinates and date/time stamps.

10. Note the date/time stamps of your digital photos.

11. Compare the date/time stamps of the track points with your digital photos to identify the position of the photos on the map.
