Advantages Of A 35mm Slr Camera

Advantages of a 35mm SLR Camera

When choosing a camera, many hobbyist photographers find themselves examining 35mm single lens reflex (SLR) cameras. This style of camera offers interchangeable lenses, allowing greater creativity. Available in both film and digital varieties, 35mm SLR cameras are equipped with a hot shoe to allow for additional lighting attachments, unlike most compact cameras.

Lenses

Changing lenses is one of the key advantages to using an SLR camera over a point-and-shoot compact camera. Photographers are not limited by the ability of the built-in lens, as on a compact camera. Wider views and the ability to zoom even further are possible with a 35mm SLR camera, simply by attaching a lens to the camera body.

Wide-Angle Lenses

Stepping back further and further to get everyone in the frame during a large family picture is a thing of the past for 35mm SLR camera users. Attach a wide-angle lens to the camera, and stay close to the family, while getting them all into the frame. Common wide-angle lenses include a 17-35mm zoom lens and a fixed focal length lens at 24mm.

Telephoto Lenses

Photographing sports, wildlife and distance scenery is easy with a 35mm SLR camera. Attach a telephoto, or far reaching zoom lens, and the subject matter is magically brought in closer. This lens advantage makes it simple to shoot children's athletic events without getting in the way of coaches and teammates. A deer lingering in a park or bird frolicking on a birdbath are easier to photograph with a 35mm SLR camera, because the photographer can stand at a distance, and not disturb the scene.

Film and Digital

Shooting with a 35mm SLR camera doesn't mean you are limited to film. Digital single lens reflex cameras, or DSLRs, offer the same great options as their film forefathers, and more. Previewing photos just after they are created, deleting unwanted frames and no longer paying for rolls of film and processing are just a few advantages of the DSLR.

Additional Lighting

Attaching an external flash unit to a 35mm SLR camera allows the photographer to bring more light into a scene. Compact cameras limit the photographer to the amount of power available from the built-in flash. A hot shoe on the top of a 35mm SLR camera makes it easy to add a flash and increase the amount of light output. High-end flash units can cast enough light to illuminate a football player, in the evening, half way across the field.
