Set A Nikon D200 To Take Speed Shots

Professional f/2.8 AF-S lenses help you shoot fast.

The D200 is an excellent camera for photographers who need to shoot at fast shutter speeds in order to stop motion. It offers a fast minimum shutter speed of 1/8000 of a second, but it also goes beyond that key feature with support for high ISOs and a fast autofocus system. After all, shooting at a fast shutter speed requires not only a fast shutter, but also enough light to expose the image and a camera that can keep up with photographers who need to shoot quickly.

Instructions

1. Insert a high-speed CF card into the camera's memory slot. Cards such as the SanDisk Extreme will provide more than enough performance to allow for not only shooting quickly, but also for taking multiple fast shots.

2. Mount an AF-S or AF-I lens with a high-speed internal focus motor on the camera's body. Use a lens with a maximum aperture that is at least as large as f/2.8. Having a large aperture will allow more light into the camera, enabling proper exposure even with very fast shutter speeds.

3. Turn the camera on by rotating the power switch that surrounds the shutter button. Hold down the "Mode" button and rotate the back control dial until the top LCD panel has an "S" in its upper left corner, indicating shutter-priority metering mode.

4. Frame your picture in the viewfinder and press the shutter halfway to focus.

5. Use the control dial to set your desired shutter speed. Typically, 1/1000 of a second is the minimum that you will want to use to stop fast moving objects. If the meter indicates "Lo," it means that there is not enough light to shoot at this speed. Hold down the ISO button and rotate the control dial to increase the ISO rating at which the camera will shoot. If that is not enough, you will need to shoot with a slower shutter speed.

6. Rotate the motor drive controller, which is a ring under the "Qual"/"WB"/"ISO" controller on the left side of the camera's top panel, to "CH." This will enable you to take five pictures per second until the buffer fills.

7. Depress the shutter button to take the picture. To take multiple pictures in a burst, hold the shutter button down.
