It is possible to scan slides using a scanner equipped with a transparent media adapter.
If you have a large collection of slides and are concerned about them getting damaged, converting those slides to a digital format is one way to preserve the images. Scanning slides on a computer's scanner is not like scanning photos or text documents. Special scanners and equipment must be used to properly scan slides, but if properly done the images will turn out clear and preserved.
Instructions
Scanning a Slide
1. Make sure the scanner is turned on (a light will turn on underneath the scanner's glass) and that the USB cable is securely plugged into the scanner as well as the computer.
2. Remove the tray from the transparent media adapter located in the lid of the scanner. The tray may have a removable insert to accommodate larger slides. Carefully insert the slide or slides to be scanned into the plastic tray. Being careful not to bend the tray, reinsert it into the scanner's transparent media adapter and close the scanner's lid gently.
3. Locate your scanner's software on your computer. Some scanners have buttons on the lid. If this is the case, then select the button used for scanning photos (typically the button has a picture of a photograph on it). If your scanner does not have a button like this on the lid, you will need to locate the scanner's software on your computer. Once you have the scanner's software pulled up, follow the instructions for scanning a slide.
4. Look over the scanned images. After the slide or slides are scanned the images will be displayed in the scanner's software. You will have the option to edit the images for sharpness, color, and other details. After you have edited the images to your satisfaction, press the button indicating you are done editing.
5. Save the scanned slides to your computer's hard drive. A window will come up that will allow you to choose where on your computer you want to save the images. You will also be able to name the images.
