Instructions For Programming Universal Remotes

Universal remotes are a handy little invention. If you lose a remote control for your TV, you can simply pick up a universal remote to replace it. Universal remotes also have the ability to integrate multiple components into one centralized solution. Here are some basic instructions for programming universal remotes.

Basic Universal Remotes

A basic universal remote is inexpensive and can be used on most home electronics. If you need a simple solution to control the basic functions of your component, a basic universal remote is for you. Basic universal remotes have two ways of programming. These instructions are not brand specific, so one brand might have a different setup, but universal remotes all work in a similar fashion.

Using the universal remote, press the corresponding source component button (e.g. TV, DVD, Cable). Next, hold down the set button and the source button simultaneously for five seconds. An LED should flash.

Search the instruction booklet to find the correct code for the component you want to hook up and enter it into the keypad on the remote, then press the power button. The component should turn off. Press the power button again to turn the component back on. Check the functions on the remote to make sure that your component responds correctly.

If none of the codes work, you can also search through the codes one by one by pressing the channel up button on the remote, then pressing the power button until the correct code is found. You have found the correct code when the component turns off. Again, turn the component back on using the remote and check to see if the functions work properly.

Learning Universal Remotes

Some basic universal remotes have a learning function. This negates the need to enter in a product code and also allows a few specific functions to work with the universal remote.

Using both the original remote and the universal remote, face the IR transmitters together and place the remotes on a flat surface about three inches away from each other.

Press the set and components buttons at the same time for five seconds. A LED should flash. Next press the particular function on the universal remote that you want to program such as channel up, power or menu. Once you have set which function you want the remote to learn, press the corresponding button on the original remote. A LED will flash indicating that the new remote has learned the function. Repeat this process for all other functions that you want your universal remote to learn.
