Out of all of your digital devices, your mobile phone might be the one that you carry most frequently. The Apple iPhone 3G is a mobile smartphone with an extensive library of software available online through the iTunes service. Much of this software is available inexpensively or free, which encourages users to try new applications frequently. If you have installed an application or made a change to your iPhone 3G that has resulted in the phone no longer operating correctly, you might be looking for a quick way to restore the phone to its original factory condition. The fastest way to do this is by performing a full reset of the phone's firmware.
Instructions
1. Launch iTunes and connect your iPhone 3G to your computer using the included USB cable. After a moment, an icon for the iPhone 3G appears in the "Devices" category on the left side of the iTunes window.
2. Click the iPhone 3G icon.
3. Click the "Restore" button in the main area of the iTunes window with the "Summary" tab selected and on top. If the iPhone 3G is operational, iTunes prompts to ask if you would like to back up the data on the device.
4. Click the "Back Up" button to save the settings on the iPhone 3G.
5. Click the "Restore" button to restore the firmware of the iPhone 3G to its original factory settings. The iTunes software begins the restoration process. During this process, the screen of the iPhone goes dark. Do not disconnect the phone from your computer.
6. Click the "OK" button when the restore process is complete and the iPhone 3G displays a screen prompting you to connect the phone to iTunes. After a moment, iTunes displays a prompt titled "Set Up Your iPhone."
7. Click the "Restore from the backup of" radio button. Click the drop-down menu at the end of the row and select the current date.
8. Click the "Continue" button to restore the settings of the iPhone to their original state.
