A microSD card works much like a standard SD card (pictured), though at a fraction of the size.
The microSD card is a member of the SD---or Secure Digital---card family. Designed as a portable format of flash memory intended for use with devices like cellphones and cameras, microSD cards often require an adapter to connect with certain devices.
Function
Because microSD card technology is retro-compatible with all SD-enabled technology, a microSD card works anywhere a standard SD card works. Due to size differences, an adapter is needed so the microSD card will fit into a standard SD card slot. This same relationship exists between a microSD card and a miniSD card: An adapter is required.
Size
Generally the size of a microSD card adapter varies depending on the type of adapter in question. For instance, a standard SD card is 1.26-inches by 0.95-inch in size with a thickness of 0.083 inch. A microSD-to-SD adapter would be identical in size with a small slot to accommodate the microSD card. The adapter would then fit into any standard SD card slot.
Significance
Without microSD card adapters, it would be more difficult to connect a microSD card to other SD-enabled devices. A microSD adapter eliminates the need for multiple ports that all serve the same function on a device. It saves time and space and is cost-effective as well.
