Instructions For A Harmony 880

For anyone with more than a few home entertainment devices, remote control management can be tricky. Keeping track of eight remotes is difficult for even the most organized person. Luckily Logitech has created the Harmony line of universal remotes, making it easy to control numerous devices with one remote.

Intial Setup

Connect your Harmony 880 to your computer with the included USB cable. Insert the software CD and begin the install process. The software CD will open the Harmony Remote website. From there you will be asked to create an account. Once you have done so, the software will perform a check to ensure your remote and your computer are communicating.

Set Up Your Devices

After you have created an account, begin setting up your devices. All of the setup for your Harmony 880 is done through your computer. You will be asked to give the manufacturer and model number of every device you would like your remote to control. Logitech has an extensive database of devices and infrared commands, so it is highly unlikely your device will not be included. But if it is not, the remote can also learn the command from your old remote.

Learn Any Additonal Commands

If Logitech's database does not already have a command from your old remote, you can teach the Harmony 880 the command through infrared learning. While logged onto the Harmony Remote website, select "More Options" from the home page. From there, select "Learn infrared commands." Point your old remote at the sensor on the bottom of the Harmony 880 and press the button you want the remote to learn. The Harmony 880 will store the command and will now work just like your old remote.

Set Up Activites

One of the advantages of Harmony remotes is the ability to create activities. Activities tell multiple components when and in what order to turn on. While logged into the Harmony Remote website, click "Add an Activity" and follow the prompts. For example, you could name an activity "Watch a DVD" and tell the remote to turn on your TV, receiver and DVD player in that order. Once you have set up your activities, your remote is ready to use.

Basic Commands

To control a single device, press the "Device" button to enter Device mode. Select a device from the list on the remotes LCD screen, and the remote will now only control that particular device. To start an activity, press the "Activities" button and select your desired activity from the list displayed on the LCD.
