Print photographs are scanned for use on websites and in presentations.
Though digital cameras are commonplace, many people still have old print photos stored in boxes, albums and picture frames. Scanners easily convert print photographs and fragile documents into digital files that are stored on DVDs, USB flash drives or CDs. The converted images can then be uploaded onto websites, emailed to family and friends, inserted into presentations or imprinted on t-shirts.
Instructions
1. Purchase a photo scanning system based on your individual needs. Consider factors such as the number of photos you need to scan when choosing a machine. Some scanners can scan multiple photos at once.
2. Clean your Kodak slides before loading them on the scanner. Remove any dust and other dirt that has accumulated on the photos, as this can affect the quality of the digital image. Use a soft cloth, preferably one that is made of anti-static microfiber material. Never use water or a water-based solution to clean your photos. Clean the slides with a film cleaner used specifically for photographs.
3. Place the photo face down on the flatbed or in the scanner slide mount. The top of the slide should be positioned towards the input tray. Center your slides so the edges are aligned in the tray or on the scanner.
4. Select the scan option and use the preview feature to select the images that you want to upload to your computer. Use the system's editing tools to tweak colors, enhance detail, crop, correct red-eye and check for any marks that may have been transferred during the scan.
5. Save the image as a TIFF or GIF file if you are planning to edit it in an image editing software program such as Photoshop. TIFF files are much larger than JPEGs, but they include more detail in the image. Convert the image to a JPEG if you plan to use it on a website or to print four-inch by six-inch photographs. Keep the image in a TIFF file to print larger, higher quality photographs.
