Diy Wireless Security Camera

It's not hard to create your own home security system.

A wireless security camera is a good way to keep watch over your house or business when you are away for a day or for a few weeks. If you connect your wireless security camera to the Internet you'll be able to keep an eye on things from anywhere in the world, whether you're down the street or across the ocean.

Instructions

1. Purchase a web cam. If you don't already have one, there are several that are especially good for home security. These include the D-Link DCS-5220 Wireless Pan/Tilt Network Camera, the Panasonic BL-C131A Wireless Network Camera and Meccano's Spykee the Wi-Fi Spy Robot. These are more expensive then your run-of-the-mill web cam, but they have functions, such as the ability to pan and tilt, that set them apart. In addition, they will work without being connected to a computer. As of 2010, these cameras cost $200 to $300.

2. Set up your camera by positioning it in the area that you wish to monitor. If you have a regular web cam, you will be limited by the length of the USB cable connecting your web cam to your computer.

3. Download a software program that will allow you to set up your web cam as a motion detector. There are a few programs that will allow you to stream the video feed from your camera through the Internet and email you or send you a text message anytime there is motion detected. These include HomeCamera, YawCam and Yoics (see Resources). All of these programs are free.

4. Log on to the site and check your video feed. You can check your feed from any PDA, cell phone or computer that has an Internet connection. You can also set up any of these programs to email or text message you whenever they detect motion.
