Digital Tv Box Reception Vs Antenna Reception

To watch programming on your television, you need a broadcast antenna and sometimes a digital TV box. You do not need a special "digital" antenna to receive digital broadcast signals.

Antenna Basics

Broadcast television in the United States is sent in a digital format. If your antenna can receive both VHF (Very High Frequency) and UHF (Ultra High Frequency) signals, then you have access to the full range of broadcast programming.

Digital TV Boxes

A "digital TV box" may be a "converter box." This attaches to an antenna and connects to an analog TV. The box converts the signal from digital to analog.

Other Uses

A "digital TV box" can also refer to a device provided by a cable or satellite company to send its digital signals to your TV. This device also converts digital to analog, if necessary.

Comparisons

Satellite digital box reception quality is not affected much by bad weather, but the satellite signal can suffer if your dish is obstructed by trees or if it is not properly oriented to the satellite.

Digital Broadcast Reception

A converter box changes a digital signal to an analog signal, which can then be shown on an analog TV. In this instance, the antenna connected to the TV is receiving a signal from a local broadcast tower. This signal can be affected by an electrical storm because the transmission tower, unlike a satellite, is located near the storm.
