Remove Scratches From A Negative

The emulsion of a film negative is sensitive and easily scratched by a fingernail or any other sharp object that comes into contact with it. The result is a line on the print that is made from the negative. There are a number of procedures that can be used to remove the scratch from the negative so that the final print will be free of any blemishes. Household supplies will be needed, as will computer devices and software programs that can be downloaded from online retailers.


Instructions "All Applications" menu. Scan the negative and save a digital file of it to the desktop. Load a graphics program, for example, Photoshop. Load the digital scan of the negative into the graphics program. Outline the scratch, using the "box" tool. Apply the "Retouching wand" (or equivalent) to the scratch to remove it. Save a a digital scan of the scratch-free negative.


3. Blow the dust off both sides of the negative with compressed air. Place the negative into the film holder, emulsion side facing in, and the holder into the film scanner that is connected to the computer. Run the scanner's software by selecting it from the "Start" > "All Applications" menu. Check the "Dust and scratch" removal checkbox. Click the "Scan" button. Save the resulting digital file that is created to the desktop. Quit the program and remove the negative from the film holder and place it away for safekeeping.
