Replace A Canon A640 Battery Cover

A defective battery cover on a Canon A640 digital camera must be replaced immediately if the camera is to be used without the power being interrupted. Replacing the battery cover is not complicated but is time-consuming, as most of the digital camera must be disassembled before the cover can be removed. You can replace the battery cover yourself if you are patient. The replacement battery cover can be purchased from a digital camera supply store, and the process requires no electronics knowledge.

Instructions

1. Remove any batteries still in the battery compartment. Open the memory card compartment and remove the memory card. Close the memory card compartment.

2. Place the soft cloth onto a hard, flat surface, then put the camera face down on the cloth. Pull out the LCD panel from the back of the camera. Rotate the LCD panel so the screen is facing you horizontally. Use the Phillips jeweler's screwdriver to remove the two small screws on the side of the LCD panel.

3. Insert the flat-edged screwdriver into the seam between the front and back parts of the LCD panel. Wiggle the flat-edged screwdriver to separate the two parts from each other. Remove the back part of the LCD panel using your fingers.

4. Use the Phillips jeweler's screwdriver to remove the small screw inside. Use the tweezers to pull the ribbon connector out of the LCD panel.

9. Insert the flat-edged jeweler's screwdriver into the seam between the front and the back of the camera at the left side. Move the flat-edged jeweler's screwdriver down the length of the left side. Repeat this procedure on the right side and across the top and bottom to loosen the front of the camera from the back.

10. Separate the back of the camera from the front by gently pulling it apart with your hands. Use the Phillips jeweler's screwdriver to remove the hidden screw that now can be seen at the uppermost corner of the battery compartment where it joins the camera body. Pull off the front of the camera and put it aside.

11. Put the back of the camera down on the soft cloth with the lens facing up. Use the Phillips jeweler's screwdriver to remove the screws from around the lens.

12. Place the back of the camera upright on the soft cloth in the normal shooting position. Remove the exposed screws from the top plate and from around the control knob at using the Phillips jeweler's screwdriver. Put the back of the camera back down with the lens facing up.

13. Insert the flat-edged jeweler's screwdriver underneath the exposed backup battery to loosen it from the contact springs it is against. Remove the battery.

14. Remove the rubber ring from around the lens. Insert the flat-edged jeweler's screwdriver between the lens and the top of the back metal plate to loosen the plate.

15. Pull off the plate from the back of the camera to expose the hinged depression that the battery cover sits in. Lift out the piece of black plastic covering the battery cover. Slip the hinges on the battery cover out from the hinged depression on the back of the camera and discard it.
