Professional movies take hours to edit, but making your home movies look professional can be quick and easy with practice. Impress your friends and turn those home movies into priceless heirlooms. Editing a video taken on a Canon Powershot A1000 can be difficult, but with practice and time, anyone can become a video editing master.
Instructions
Upload Video to Computer
1. In order to edit a video taken on a Canon Powershot A1000, you will need to first upload the video onto your computer. The Canon Powershot requires you to first install the software disk that came with the camera. For both Windows and Mac users, place the CD-ROM in the computer's CD-ROM drive and click "Easy Installation." Follow the onscreen instructions to finish the installation; restart your computer to complete the installation.
2. Make sure your camera is off before plugging it into your computer. Open the camera's terminal cover and then place the smaller plug of the USB cord into the matching slot. Then, plug the other end it into your computer's USB port. Now turn on your camera by pressing the play button. A window on your computer will pop up.
3. Select "Canon CameraWindow" and click "OK." The direct transfer menu will appear on your camera's screen, and the transfer button on the camera will light blue. Click "Transfer Untransferred Images" and all images not previously transferred will be transferred to the computer. Once the transfer is complete, turn off the camera and unplug the cable. Transferred images and videos are sorted by date and saved in separate folders in the My Picture folder for Windows users or the Picture folder for Mac users.
Edit the Video
4. Open the movie editing program installed on your computer. Mac users already have iMovie installed, but Windows users may have to purchase an editing program and install it before editing can begin. A popular choice for Windows users is CyberLink PowerDirector.
5. Find the "Import," "Capture" or "Transfer" button to bring your video into the program. This is usually located at the top of the program, typically under "File" or "Open." Since your video is already uploaded on your computer, you can locate the file and easily upload it into the program.
6. Place the file on the timeline. The video may have imported in separate fragments or as one whole video, so make sure the entire video is placed on the timeline. If the movie is transferred as a whole, cut it into practical segments to make rearranging and editing easier.
7. Arrange the clips into the order you want them to occur. Cut out any segments you don't want by clicking the "delete" button. Once the clips are arranged in the order you want, add transitions, like fading, or text to make the video flow well and look clean and professional. Most programs have a wide variety of transitions built in to the program and will also support adding in still images to your movie.
8. Export your movie. Popular movie formats are .AVI, .WMV, .MOV, and .MPG or .MPEG. If you are posting the video to the Internet, .MPG or .MPEG would be the best option, as this format is supported by most Internet browsers and is viewable by both PCs and Macs. Some editing software will allow you to burn the movie directly onto a DVD, but exporting it into Quicktime (.MOV) will allow the file to be viewed on any computer with the proper software installed.
