Make An Earbud Microphone

Headphones allow for a personal connection between the music and the listener, regardless of the intended function of these small speakers. In-ear headphones, or earbuds, are compact in size but low in audio quality. However, despite the sound setback, earbuds provide for a variety of functions. If you make these in-ear headphones into a microphone, the recorded effect may be just what you are looking for. Determine what type of device you will be using to record this earbud microphone, as it will surely make a difference in the quality of the sound.

Instructions

1. Check the size of the microphone input on the chosen device for recording. Computers tend to all feature an 1/8-inch jack; therefore, the regular plug on the earbud will do just fine. However, soundboard mixers and other higher-end recording devices may have a 1/4-inch jack, so you will need an adapter.

2. Plug the male end of the earbud into the microphone jack, ensuring that the connection is secure. A loose connection may disrupt or disable the use of the earbud as a microphone, so make sure this link is acceptable.

3. Open your audio device's "Settings" menu to test the capabilities of this earbud microphone on your computer. Select the microphone from this menu to access the volume and other features. When you speak into one of the individual earbuds, the microphone levels will show accordingly. On select devices, you will hear yourself through the connected speakers. For non-computer recording devices, simply turn the device on and adjust the levels for the input accordingly.
