Compare Internet Phone Providers

The continually rising price of conventional services and exponential advances in consumer technology are fueling consumer migration to Internet phone providers. Voice over Internet Protocol (VoIP) offers users the most popular calling features for about 20 percent of the cost of traditional phone services. There are dozens of Internet phone providers offering a wide variety of packages and rates; comparing providers is the most difficult part of making the switch.

Instructions

1. Decide which phone services you need. Some providers do not offer 911 services. While most VoIP companies offer features such as Caller ID and call waiting at no additional charge, some charge additional fees. Knowing your needs will make comparing phone providers easier and prevent surprise charges in the future.

2. Consider any special needs and circumstances that affect your service needs. Are your electric and Internet service stable even in storm conditions? Do you require more than one phone line or number? Do you make frequent calls to exotic locations? Many Internet phone provider service packages include unlimited long distance calling, but several charge a per-call rate that can increase your bill dramatically.

3. Determine how much you can afford to spend upfront. Most Internet phone providers charge for the hardware, and the best rates, as low as $9.99 a month, require annual payment. Month-to-month plans are available, and periodic specials can help you save on hardware costs. Having a clear budget helps you quickly eliminate providers with incompatible financial requirements.

4. Identify your customer service and tech support expectations. Are you confident that you can sail through the install and setup, or are you going to need somebody to walk you through? Do you need to talk to a live person, or is email okay with you? The availability of personal service varies widely between Internet phone providers; clarifying your needs during the comparison process helps avoid frustration and dissatisfaction later.

5. Evaluate VoIP companies side by side. Use your notes to narrow the choices down to two or three providers that best fit your criteria. Visit each Internet phone provider's website; read the Terms of Service thoroughly and look for any service and/or hardware special.
