Not Lose A Lens Cap

Without a lens cap, a camera lens is unprotected from the elements.

Losing lens caps is a constant tiny problem for photographers. A lens cap protects the lens from incidental scratches, damage and dust. Unfortunately, due to their small size, they are lost more than most users would prefer. The best way to keep track of them is to dedicate a location that you always place one when shooting. It requires discipline, but once this location is set, you will never again search for a lens cap. The process of developing this safe location requires a few silly exercises, but it will build an important lens cap habit.

Instructions

1. Remove the lens cap from the lens.

2. Search your clothes or camera bag for a place that the lens cap will fit and stay there. Some examples are a back pocket, a pocket protector, a small zipper pocket on the camera bag, etc. Place the lens in there.

3. Shake and jostle the location you selected for the lens cap. Turn it upside down. If the lens cap falls out, find another location. The cap needs to be secure should it encounter any turbulence.

4. Remove the lens cap from the safe location and place it back on the camera. Remove the cap from the camera and place it back in the safe location. Repeat this several times. If you discover this process is tedious, find a new location. Your safe place should be convenient.

5. Write down on a piece of paper the safe location of your lens cap. This will help you remember it with instinct rather than cognition.

6. Place the lens cap in the safe location on a day you are not shooting and continue your day as normal. At the end of the day, remove the cap from the location and place it back on the lens.
