What Flashes Work With A Canon Dslr

Canon makes a range of flashes suitable for amatuer and professional photographers.

Camera flashes or strobes are most often used to illuminate scenes or subjects that cannot be properly exposed by the camera. They add another dimension to photography, allowing photographers to control the direction and intensity of the light on their subject. Varying lighting intensities and positions evoke different feelings in scenes that would otherwise appear everyday or ordinary. If you are using a Canon DSLR, there are a number of reliable flashes that will work with your camera.

Canon Speedlite 580EX II

The Speedlite 580EX II is compatible with Canon's complete range of current DSLRs and the Powershot G-series (G3 to G12 models). The flash is also functional with a few film SLRs (EOS-1v, EOS-3, Elan 7N series, Elan 7 series, Elan II series). Powered by four AA-size batteries, the unit can produce from 100 to 700 flashes per set of batteries, depending on the intensity of the strobe. The average time for the flash to recycle is around 0.1 to 6 seconds during use. The working distance is approximately 1.6 to 98 feet when flashing a subject. The flash is also compatible with "Through the Lens" (TTL) flash metering. The head of the flash can swivel, giving the user more control over bouncing the light.

Canon Speedlite 430EX II

Compatible with all EOS and Powershot G Series cameras, the Canon Speedlite 430EX II also makes use of TTL flash metering. The working distance on this flash is approximately 2.3 to 80 feet. The unit takes four AA-size batteries, which will get around 200 to 1,400 flashes before needing to be replaced, depending on the intensity of each flash. The recycling time of the Speedlite is between 0.1 to 3.7 seconds during use. There are six configurable custom functions built-in into the flash. The flash head can swivel, giving the user the option of bouncing the light.

Canon Speedlite 270EX

The Speedlite 270EX is a basic flash suitable for basic functions and ease of use. It is simple to use and aimed at the amateur to casual photographer. Compatible with all EOS, Powershot G-series and a few SX-series cameras, the Speedlite 270EX is much smaller than the other flash options. Taking two AA-size batteries, the workable flash range is approximately 2.3 to 52 feet. The flash recycling time of the unit is around 0.1 to 3.9 seconds. TTL modes can be selected or adjust by the user. The head of the unit can swivel to bounce the light.
