What Is An Ieee 1394 Cable

The growth of computers and the devices that interface with them often requires communications between the two types of devices. To transfer information, a computer may need to receive and send data through a hardware port connected by cable to a similar port on the external device. One such connection is called IEEE 1394.

Description

An IEEE 1394, or FireWire, cable is one that uses the high-speed, serial bus standard developed by the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers. The cable allows the transfer of data, such as images, audio and video, among computers, peripherals such as portable drives and consumer electronics products such as camcorders, cameras and digital TVs.

Testing

The manufacturer must test the cable against requirements established by IEEE, which defines the types of boards used in testing, the number of samples, atmospheric conditions and measurements.

Certification

Written cable specifications then go to the 1394 Trade Association certifying that the cable meets all specifications. The association describes the cable as being certified on its website, and the manufacturer can use the 1394 Compliance Logo with the product.
