Pay For Texting With Prepaid Phones

If you're using a prepaid cellphone and you want to send text messages using your phone there are several different methods you can employ. For instance, you can find a pre-paid plan with a monthly charge option or you may choose to pay per text via upfront charges. There are several methods that can you use by choosing the right pre-paid carrier plan.

Instructions

1. Find a pre-paid plan that offers "text messaging" packages. For instance, you can pay $4.99 for 200 text messages with an AT&T GoPhone plan or $19.99 for unlimited text messages (as of 2009). Check with your pre-paid carrier to see if it offers its own pre-paid packages.

2. Pay per text message. The GoPhone plans offer a $0.20 per text message option. These plans work in two ways. If you pay per minute for example, $10 is worth 100 minutes or $.10 per minutes. If you use five text messages you will have 90 minutes of talk time remaining since $1 was used for text messaging.

3. Blend a combination of text packages with pay-per-text options. For instance, you could use 200 messages for $4.99 and then pay $0.20 per text message if you have to send an emergency text. Most programs allow you to check text messaging totals directly from your devices or online.

4. Use an instant messaging (IM) program to send text messages for free. If you have a WiFi enabled device there are many IM programs which can be found at Hangango and Mobihand, several popular mobile phone software sites. Connect to WiFi and use the program to send messages for free outside of SMS fees. (See links to mobile app sites in Resources below.)
