Measure Sound Levels

Measure Sound Levels

Whether you are in radio, television or music production, it is important to be able to measure and monitor audio levels. For a trained professional, it is second nature, but if you are just starting out, it can be a little tricky. If you are able to master the skill, it will make your professional and personal audio recordings sound crystal clear. Below are two different methods to measure your sound levels and make sure that you have quality recordings.

Instructions

With an Output Meter

1. Make sure that your equipment is properly connected. Consult the user's manual to determine which inputs and outputs are necessary for your project.

2. Test your equipment by running some type of audio. It can be a voice through a microphone or something pre-recorded. If you are able to hear the audio, it means that everything is connected and working properly.

3. Begin running your audio (either voice or sound through a microphone or a pre-recorded audio clip). Monitor the audio output meter on your equalizer or mixing board. It will give you a reading on the levels of your audio.

Without an Output Meter

4. Make sure that you have properly working headphones or speakers.

5. Adjust the volume meter so that the level in your headphones is somewhere in the mid range. Once it is set, do not move it.

6. As you begin playing your audio source, slowly increase your input levels. Keep close attention to the output. If you start to hear "static" or "fuzz," lower the levels a bit until it is clear.
