Make Enlargements From Digital Cameras

It takes a few clicks of your computer mouse to enlarge a picture for printing.

If you've taken a great picture and want to display it in a large frame, you don't need an expensive photo-editing program. Any photo-editing software, from Microsoft's free Paint program to Adobe Photoshop, will allow you to resize a picture.

The key is to think about enlargements before you take the picture. Make sure your digital camera is set to record the largest image allowable. On many cameras, the option is called "Fine." That means your 6-megapixel camera is taking 6-megapixel images. This is important because a picture will lose its sharpness when it is blown up too large.

Instructions

1. Open your computer's photo-editing program.

2. Use the program to open the picture needing to be enlarged. Under the "File" menu, choose "Open." In the dialog box that opens, navigate to the correct picture and choose "Open" again.

3. Choose the "Resize" or "Image Size" option. In the dialog box, enter the size you want your photo to be. A good enlargement is at least 200 pixels per inch. Make sure the "maintain aspect ratio" or "constrain proportions" box is checked so your picture is resized proportionally and does not become distorted.

4. Choose the "Crop" option if your picture is a little longer or wider than it needs to be. Click once to start the tool and drag the crop box -- marked with a dotted line -- to the desired shape. Double-click or hit "OK" when finished.

5. Save a copy of the resized picture. Click "File" and "Save As."

6. Print the enlargement or upload the file to a photo-printing service.
