No more shaky, hand-held shots.

A Steadicam is a device used to stabilize the movement of a video camera while the videographer is walking or running. Variations range from hand-held to torso-worn vest and arm configurations for larger cameras. The hand-held version uses a counterbalance technique to minimize camera wobble when moving and offers the greatest usability, as the camera can stay attached to it when not in use. The overall effect is smooth, professional-looking footage. Make your own stabilizer to save money.

Instructions

1. Hold the steel pipe tee fitting, the pipe fitting with three openings, so that one threaded opening is at the top, one is at the bottom and one is on the side. Screw the 2-inch steel pipe nipple into the threaded opening at the top.

2. Screw the 12-inch steel pipe nipple into the threaded opening at the bottom.

3. Screw the 8-inch steel pipe nipple into the threaded opening at the side.

4. Drill a 1/4-inch hole in the center of each steel pipe end cap, which is a small rounded cap for sealing the end of a pipe.

5. Place a 1/4-inch-20 bolt, 1/4-inch diameter with 20 threads per inch, through the hole of one end cap so that its head is inside the end cap, and screw a nut on, tightening it to the cap. Screw the end cap onto the 2-inch nipple.

6. Place the other 1/4-inch-20 bolt through a 1 1/4-inch washer and then through the center hole of the 2 1/2-lb. weight. Place the end cap onto the bolt and screw a nut on, tightening the weight to the end cap. The nut should be inside the end cap.

7. Screw the end cap, with weight, onto the 12-inch steel pipe nipple.

8. Screw the wing nut upside down onto the bolt in step 5. Place the 1 1/4-inch washer over the bolt to sit on the wing nut.

9. Screw the 1/4-inch thread on the underside of the HV20 video camera onto the bolt. Tighten the wing nut so that the washer clamps the camera firmly to the DIY support system.

10. Hold the DIY support system with one hand on the 8-inch steel pipe nipple to the side, and the other hand on the 12-inch steel pipe nipple below.
