Remote controls allow for the functionality of a television set to be controlled from a distance. This enables the viewer to change the channel, volume, picture settings, audio settings, etc., without interacting directly with the television unit itself.
How a Remote Control Communicates with a Television Unit
Remote controls generally use infrared technology to communicate with the television unit. There is an infrared broadcaster on the remote control that passes information from the remote to the an infrared receiver on the television unit. The television picks up the infrared signal, then determines whether there has been a button pushed on the remote. Pressing different buttons will pass varying signals to the television. The television then performs whatever operation has been programmed to return for the signal it receives.
Functionality
A remote control is limited in its ability to pass information to the television unit. It needs to be pointed in a direction that allows the infrared signal to pass from the remote to the receiver on the unit. There is also a limit on the distance these signals can travel and still communicate properly with the receiver. Generally, the distance will not be an issue, as television units will not need to be controlled from that far away.
