Digital optical cables are used to connect components such as Blu-ray players, cable boxes and video game consoles to AV receivers to transmit 5.1 surround sound audio. The cables use fiber optic technology where light is used to transmit data. Now that the older coaxial audio standard has been discontinued, it is the only way to transmit Dolby Digital and DTS audio.
Instructions
1. Remove the plastic caps that may be on the tips of the optical cable or covering the optical input or output ports on your AV devices.
2. Insert the optical cable into the optical output port on your source component. The cable should click into place.
3. Insert the other end of the optical cable to your AV receiver. Use an optical the optical port that is connected to the video port that you are using so you get audio and video on the same channel.
4. Turn on both devices. You should see the cable transmitting light on both the output and input ports. If one port does not light up, it is not connected securely.
