A helmet cam can record video in motion.
A helmet cam can be used to capture exciting moments on a dirt bike or race car or even when running through the forest. They are very popular in voyeur sports and in high-adrenaline activities. Purchasing a helmet camera is relatively inexpensive, but you can create your own with just a few materials found around your home. After making your very own helmet cam, you can be outside making movies of your recreational activity the way you see it.
Instructions
1. Cut the 2-by-4-inch board with a handsaw so it is 2 inches thick and about 3 inches in length. The width can remain 2 inches. Sand the bottom of the board with sandpaper until the board can fit the grooves and arch of the helmet. This will create a smooth base for the camera to sit on. If the board is not fastened properly, it may fall off during use.
2. Place a strong abrasive on the bottom of the block. This will create a bond between the wood and the metal or plastic helmet. Place the block on top of the helmet so it fits properly. Hold the block into position until the abrasive dries. The time it will take largely depends upon the type of glue and the material the glue is placed on. Refer to the manufacturer's directions for estimated drying times.
3. Place the bracket camera mount on top of the block. This item can be found with any tripod or purchased alone at many camera and camera accessory retailers. Place the bracket in the middle of the wood so it is level. Place two rubber straps over the bracket. Screw each strap end into the side of the wood with 1-inch wood screws. Make sure the straps hold the bracket securely in place.
4. Twist the bottom of the camera slowly onto the camera mounting bracket. Make sure the camera is tightly fastened and does not move on its own. If needed, place another strap over the camera. Ensure the camera lens is facing toward the front of the helmet.
