Measure A Belt To Repair A Turntable

Belt-driven turntables will require belt replacement as the belt ages. Belts crack, break, stretch and wear which makes it difficult to determine the original size. Keep three things in mind to determine measure your old turntable belt and get a perfect fit. Calculate the length, width and thickness of the old belt.

Instructions

1. Hold a worn belt by the ends without stretching to determine the length of a turntable belt. Measure the inside of the belt's length and multiply by two.

2. Lay a broken belt out straight without stretching it and measure the length. If the belt is in more than one piece, put the pieces together and then measure the length.

3. Wrap a piece of string or thin wire around the turntable and the motor pulley to measure for a seriously damaged or lost belt. Follow the belt's path, mark the string or twist the wire at the correct length, remove the string or wire, stretch it out straight and measure the length.

4. Measure the width in an area of a turntable belt that is in good condition.

5. Look for wear marks on the turntable to measure for the width of a lost or destroyed belt. Measure from top to bottom on a turntable motor pulley with guides, and then reduce the dimensions slightly. This allows for the up and down movement that will occur.

6. Take care when measuring the old belt's thickness so the motor is able to function at a normal speed. Most turntables require a belt 0.020 inches thick.
