Use your webcam to keep an eye on your home.
Viewing a PC camera over the Internet will allow you to see whatever it is happening, even if you are thousands of miles away. You can keep an eye on your house when you are on vacation, or to watch your puppy, while you are at work. All you need is a web cam, an Internet connection and a free piece of software.
Instructions
1. Install the webcam to your computer and set it up to monitor the area that you wish to monitor. Begin by connecting the USB cable from the camera into your computer's port and then install the webcam software that came with the kit. Just follow the installation wizard and reboot your computer when finished.
2. Open up the software application by going to the "Start Menu" and launching it.
3. Find a program that will allow you to broadcast your camera feed over the Internet. Three applications that you can use are HomeCamera.com, Broadcam, or Cambrosia. As of 2010, these services cost anywhere between free and $60. You will also need to register by providing a user name, email, and log in details for some of these sites.
4. Download and install the software that you have chosen to use to your computer. The programs require Windows XP or Windows Vista and you will need a minimum of 512 MB of RAM.
5. Setup the software. You will need to create a name for the camera and the installation wizard will walk you through the setup to configure the camera. It will take about 5 minutes to complete.
6. Go to the website where you downloaded the software and enter your log in details. You can do this from any computer, cell phone or PDA that is connected to the Internet. You will immediately see your PC camera feed, which you can view from anywhere in the world.
