A polyphonic ringtone is a music-based ringtone that offers more complexities than a single-tone ring, but not as much clarity as an MP3 ringtone. Individuals may wish to convert an MP3 file into a polyphonic ringtone in order to personalize cell phones that may not be able to support the MP3 format.
Instructions
1. Insert a music CD into your computer. Use Apple iTunes, Microsoft Windows Media Player, or the music management software of your choice to extract the song that you wish to convert. Drag the MP3 file to your computer desktop.
2. Launch your MP3 conversion software that utilizes the LAME audio compression codec. Various companies and software developers offer open-source software that utilizes this codec. For the purpose of this example, we will use RazorLAME (see Resources to download).
3. Open the MP3 file from Step 1 in the audio compression software. In RazorLAME, click "Choose Files" and select the MP3 file. Some software may also support drag-and-drop importing. If you are unsure of open an MP3 file in the audio compression software you chose, consult the user manual.
4. Encode the software as a WAV file. Select "WAV" from the drop-down menu of available conversion file types supported by your audio compression software. This list is typically found on the main interface screen of the audio compression software, or in the "Options" menu at the top of the screen. In RazorLAME, it is listed under "Options."
5. Click "Encode." Your audio compression software will then convert the MP3 file to a polyphonic ringtone WAV file. Depending on the size of the MP3, this process may take several minutes.
