The Nikon Coolpix L21 and L22 are part of a series of ultra-compact Nikon digital cameras. They are ideal for basic use in everyday situations. There are subtle differences between the two models, especially in regard to photograph quality and zoom capability. The L22 has more advanced features than the L21. However, the L21 is smaller in size and has better battery life.
Photo Quality
Megapixels are the resolution, or quality, of a photograph. The higher the megapixels, the higher the photograph quality. The Nikon L21 has 8-megapixel quality. The Nikon L22 has 12-megapixel quality, making it far superior in photograph quality than the L21. Furthermore, the L22 has a larger LCD screen for viewing photographs. The L22's LCD screen measures three inches, while the L21's LCD screen measures 2.5 inches.
Zoom
A digital camera can have two types of zoom: optical and digital. Optical zoom utilizes the actual lens to get closer to the subject. Digital zoom digitally enlarges the subject and is of lesser overall quality than optical zoom. Both the L22 and L21 have 3.6 optical zoom. However, the L22 also has 4x digital zoom, thus it is able to zoom in closer to subjects.
Size and Weight
Due its additional features such as more zoom and megapixel quality, the L22 is larger in size than the L21. The L22 measures 3.9 inches high, 2.4 inches long and 1.2 inches wide. The L21, on the other hand, is slightly smaller. It measures 2.3 inches high, 2.4 inches high and 1.2 inches wide. The L22 is also heavier than the L21. The L22 is 7.6 ounces, while the L21 is 6 ounces. Both are relatively lightweight, but depending on how often you use the camera and where you want it to take it, you may prefer a lighter and smaller camera.
Battery Life
Both cameras use two AA batteries. Rechargeable batteries can be used but they cannot be charged in the camera. Even though they both use the same batteries, the L21 has better battery life. The L21 can take approximately 280 shots before the batteries need to be recharged or replaced. The L22 can take approximately 240 shots.
Color
The L21 and L22 are each available in different sets of colors. Both are available in champagne silver. The L21 is also available in brown and pink. The L22 is sold in black, blue and red.
