TiVo and other DVRs are basically stripped down computers with hard drives. They convert video signals to digital formats and write those files to the hard drive for later playback. With that in mind, an older computer can be easily converted to a DVR by adding an interface for the video inputs from your cable or satellite TV system and outputs to allow stored video to properly display on your TV.
Instructions
1. Open the computer case. Some cases are secured with thumb screws, others require a Phillips head screwdriver, and yet others have pressure catches.
2. Remove the existing video card. If the computer's video card is built in to the main board, skip this step.
3. Install the integrated TV tuner and graphics card in an open slot. If your computer has an integrated video card, most computers will default to the new card installed in the slot.
4. Place your Windows CD in the drive and boot the computer to perform a fresh Windows installation. Although you may be able to get the DVR working using the old installation, performing a fresh installation often helps with DVR reliability. Make sure your computer has an available Internet connection so the installation can download any new drivers not contained on your media.
5. Connect the video from your cable or satellite service to the input on your TV tuner card. Connect the TV output to your television.
6. Insert the CD that came with your integrated TV tuner and video card once Windows is fully installed and run the setup program. This will install any missing drivers and will install the Media Center software that will allow your PC to work as a DVR.
7. Start the media center software and follow the configuration instructions.
