Described as an analog quartz watch, the Seiko Kinetic 5M63 belongs to a class of watches that convert kinetic movement to electrical energy. The watch's manufacturer, Japanese company Seiko, developed this technology, which is called Automatic Generating System, or AGS.
History
The class of watches that Seiko Kinetic 5M63 belongs to made its first appearance in 1986 at the European Watch, Clock and Jewelery Fair in Basel, Switzerland. Seiko released the first commercially available Kinetic watch in 1988.
Function
Each Seiko Kinetic 5M63 has an automatic generating system that automatically generates the electric energy to power the watch. This is accomplished by combining a self-winding rotor mechanism with a quartz crystal to power them. The 5M63 has a power reserve indicator to notify the user of the duration of its operation without the need for a charge. It is charged by swinging it from side to side. Two hundred and fifty swings gives the watch a day of reserve power, while up to 500 swings doubles its duration to two days.
Purpose and Significance
Seiko came up with this technology to save energy, and thus lessen the reliance on batteries. The Seiko Kinetic was the first watch to use kinetic movement for its operation. As of December 2010, the company has sold over eight million of these devices, including the 5M63.
