Fix A Slide Projector

Slide projects used slide trays or carousels.

Slide projectors are used to view 35mm slides. The slides are held in trays or "carousels" on top of the slide projector. A mechanism carries the slide into a holder where a light source illuminates the slide that is projected through a lens onto a screen or white wall. Just like any other mechanical product that has moving parts, a slide projector can from time to time stop working. Whether it be a burned-out bulb or jammed slide, in most cases you can probably fix the projector at home.

Instructions

1. Unplug the slide projector before you attempt any repair. If the bulb is working, allow it and the projector to cool for a few minutes before you start your repair.

2. Remove the slide tray if you need to fix a jammed slide. In most cases there will be a release button or a release locking mechanism to remove the tray or carousel off of the projector.

3. Look for a manual advance button or lever. Some models allowed for operators to remove a stuck slide this way. If not, once the tray or carousel is removed you will be able to look into the cavity where the slide is held. The slide should be visible, and you can reach in and remove the slide. Use caution as the area may still be hot.

4. Take a can of compressed air and blow out any dust or dirt that may be impeding the advancement of slides.

5. Replace the slide tray or carousel and continue with the slide show.
