Get a Refrigerator & Freezer Cold
Keeping your refrigerator and freezer running properly is important because, if your food is at an unsafe temperature, it can cause you to get sick. Both the fridge and the freezer need to be at a specific temperature in order to maintain food safety levels. You can do plenty of things to make sure that your fridge and freezer are both running coldly enough to ensure the safety of your food.

Keeping Your Unit Cold
1. Set the fridge and the freezer to the appropriate temperatures. Your fridge should be somewhere between 36 and 40 degrees Fahrenheit. The freezer needs to be set to between 0 and 5 degrees Fahrenheit.
2. Make sure there is enough space between the fridge and the wall. If the fridge unit is too close to the wall, the cooling coils will have to work harder to cool and your unit may not cool your food properly. Leave at least an inch of space between the wall and the refrigeration unit.
3. Check the seal around your fridge and freezer doors. If the seal is too old and no longer closing properly, the cool air from the unit may slip out and your food can spoil. Clean the seal to see if that helps it close fully. If not, you may have to replace the seal or possibly buy a new unit.
4. Get your food from the unit quickly. Leaving the door open longer than necessary lets out energy and it can take the unit more time and energy to get to the proper cooling temperature again. Make sure that other members of your family aren't standing with the doors open for too long as well.
5. Keep both the fridge and freezer well stocked. The cold air circulates better in a unit that is properly stocked as opposed to one that is sparsely stocked. Don't over-pack the unit, but make sure that it has enough food in it.
6. Store your food properly within it. If something is hot, wait until it cools before putting it in the fridge or freezer. Other foods need to be wrapped properly in cling wrap or aluminum foil before putting in in the fridge or freezer. Doing this helps the unit not have to work as hard to cool, and therefore cools more efficiently.
7. Defrost your freezer. A buildup of frost can prevent your freezer from properly freezing your food. Some models have auto defrost, but if not, perform a manual defrost each month.
