Replacing or upgrading a Tivo HD hard drive can be done at home, but there is a risk involved. Opening up a Tivo HD to work on anything inside of it requires damaging or removing the "Warranty Void" sticker that can be found on the back. Have the Tivo HD repaired by an authorized service technician to prevent the warranty from being voided. If maintaining the warranty is not an issue, the Tivo HD can be upgraded or repaired at home with few problems.
Instructions
1. Remove the four screws in the Tivo HD case. Pull off the cover. Set the Tivo facing away from you and the hard drive will be on the right side. Unplug the cables on the back of the hard drive, remove the two screws holding it in place and remove the hard drive.
2. Make sure the jumper settings on the replacement drive are set to 3.0 GB/sec instead of 1.5 GB/sec. Attach the original Tivo drive to the first open SATA port on the computer and the new drive to the second open port. Do not disconnect the computer's boot drive.
3. Turn on the computer and boot into Windows. Answer any questions about drive initialization with "No" or "Cancel."
4. Run WinMFS.exe. From the task bar, choose "File" and then "Select Drive." Go to the A Drive section and select the original Tivo HD hard drive. Choose "Select."
5. Back up the Tivo HD hard drive. From the task bar, choose "File" and select "TiVo Drive (Truncated)." Choose the files that need to be backed up from the menu that appears and hit "Start."
6. Close the back-up window. From the task bar, choose "Tools" and then select "Mfscopy." Choose the original Tivo HD hard drive as the source drive and the new hard drive as the target. Press "Start."
7. Close out all programs and shut down the computer. Disconnect the hard drives. Mount the new hard drive to the Tivo. Put the cover back on the Tivo.
