My Videos Are Blurry & Have Bad Sound

Camcorders must be used properly for the best results.

When analyzing why videos are blurry and have bad sound, take a systematic approach and address each issue independently. While some video problems are due to post-shooting computer capture, uploading, editing and file compression issues, many more are due to improper use of the camcorder and microphone.

Troubleshooting

Troubleshooting problem video and audio at the source is as straightforward as plugging the camcorder into a television set and playing the video. The video may be played back directly on the camera and listened to with headphones, but due to the small format limitations of the camcorder screen and headphone speakers, the representation may not be adequate. If the video and audio seems fine with either method, the problem lies somewhere in the transfer of the data to the computer, editing or upload settings to online video sites.

Preventing Blurry Videos at the Camcorder

Prevention of blurry videos while shooting footage can be accomplished with several techniques. Using a tripod whenever possible is a sure-fire blur cure. When hand-held shots are necessary, try to use the camcorder's image stabilization feature if equipped, holding the camcorder in both hands with the elbows making contact with your body. Stand with both feet on the ground and avoid walking, swaying or swift side-to-side or up-and-down motions. When using auto-focus, be aware that the object closest to the camera lens will be focused upon, leaving everything else in a blurred state. Using the manual focus feature requires practice and attention to the action, but it can cure many difficult auto-focusing issues.

Curing Bad Sound at the Camcorder

By nature of design, camcorder microphones are frequently not in the best physical position for optimum sound. One cure is to use a good-quality external shotgun microphone mounted on the camera, but the best method when practical is to place the microphone on a stand as close to the audio source as possible. Of course, you'll require a camcorder with provision to attach an external mic, but if yours does not, try and video as close to the action as possible.

Solving Computer and Software Problems

Solving blur and bad sound on the computer, editing software and Internet upload end can be complex. Since there are many types of camcorders, programs, file types and corresponding settings, it is best to study carefully the specifications and recommendations in your camcorder manual and software help guide. When uploading video to Internet sites, observe the recommended file type, frame and date rate, resolution and sample rate. This information can be found in the "Help" or "FAQ" sections of video upload sites.
