There are many reasons why you may want to record a phone call. Reporters and journalists find it very helpful when conducting interviews and sometimes it's the only way to ensure accuracy for a story. Some people may want to have a verbal receipt of a financial transaction and the police may ask you to record a call for security reasons. Whatever reason you need to record a call, make sure you check your local laws. Some states require that only one party know about the recording, while other states demand that all parties be aware that the call is being recorded.
Instructions
Connect a Voice Recorder
1. Buy a voice recorder that supports cell phone connections. You will also need a telephone recording device. This is a cable that plugs into your voice recorder's microphone jack. Most digital voice recorders will support a cell phone hookup.
2. Connect your voice recorder to your phone with your telephone recording cable. The cable should run from your cell phone's ear-piece jack to the microphone jack on your voice recorder.
3. Insert a pair of headphones into the voice recorder's ear-piece jack. This will allow you to hear the phone conversation while recording it.
4. Press record on your voice recorder and start your phone conversation by verbally stamping a time, date and reason for calling. If you don't want the other party to know that the call is being recorded, make your verbal stamp before or after the call.
5. Remove your voice recorder from your phone when you're done recording. If you have the proper software, you can then hook up your voice recorder to your computer and download the recording.
