Prepaid calling cards or add-on subscription services are a cost effective way to call internationally from a cell phone.
Placing international calls on a cell phone will cost a lot of money unless you have a plan. With a rise in competition for telecommunication services, a growing number of companies offer add-on long distance plans for international calling. The monthly fee entitles the subscriber to a certain number of minutes, often varying by country and distance. Subscribers receive a special number to call for access to the international dialing service and a unique Personal Identification Number (PIN) to enter on the telephone keypad to initiate the call. Prepaid international calling cards are another cost-effective alternative.
Instructions
Call Internationally on a Cell Phone
1. Learn the rates of your cell phone provider before attempting an international call. Many cell phone companies do not allow customers to place international calls. Those that do typically charge exorbitant rates.
2. Research the available subscription services for international calling. Fees and services vary dramatically, with call rates as low as 2 cents per minute, up to $1 or more per minute.
3. Choose a subscription plan that meets your calling needs.
4. Place the international call by dialing your subscriber service number to access an international signal.
5. Enter your PIN number.
6. Dial the international number when prompted, making sure to enter the appropriate country code first (see References for a link to codes).
7. Use a prepaid calling card to place international calls, following the instructions on the card. The procedure is virtually identical to a subscriber service: dial the access number and enter the PIN or security code on the back of the card, which is typically revealed by scraping away a thin silver coating to expose the number when the card is activated.
